morning. the company has lost a third of its value in the past two months. a lot of that because of the model s fires but the shares are rallying this morning by more than 7%. stocks ended on a downward note yesterday and they look like they are heading further lower again this morning. speculation again on the federal reserve starting to taper its bond issues. possibly at its meeting later this month due to some decent manufacturing news in the u.s. let's look at the big board and see how the numbers are doing. dow dropping 60 points. back below 16,000. nasdaq is down by 7. s&p down 4 points. back below 1800. michelle and frank, back to you. >> all right. kcbs radio's financial reporter jason brooks thank you. 6:44. let's check the roads with elizabeth. >> thanks, guys. it is rough going right now heading out of tracy towards the altamont pass. a truck spilled some sort of scrap metal other debris and it's blocking the middle lanes so it is super stacked upcoming off the 205. and until you get past the north flynn exit and beyond that, traffic is just
6:45 am
gridlocked this morning. it looks like past that vasco road exit we really start to see those speed sensors improve towards the dublin interchange. so again, this is where the scrap metal debris is blocking lanes and that's where we're really seeing the real bottleneck. also in the east bay westbound 24 if you are heading toward the macarthur maze here's what it looks like through oakland. pretty good. bay bridge toll plaza stacked up for 20 minutes. here's a live look at the san mateo bridge. we just cleared a crash or chp just cleared a crash before the toll plaza on the san mateo bridge. now it sounds like there's a new one so traffic is beginning to stack up towards clawiter on westbound 92. once you got past the pay gates westbound 92 looks good toward the high-rise on the flat section. nimitz freeway 880 in oakland which has been a great ride this morning from hayward all the way to your downtown oakland exits. when you hit the road tune to kcbs radio 740-am and 106.9-fm. with more on your temperatures, here's lawrence.

the low clouds. i think as you head around the country, a very warm day partly cloudy skies, 81 degrees in houston. 45 degrees coming this morning in denver but snow and colder temperatures by the afternoon. showers 48 in new york. the cold front moving by watch what happens in the afternoon your skies clear out the winds subside and as this starts to clear out you will see cold temperatures developing late tonight and early tomorrow morning. temperatures highs only in the 50s around the bay area for today. i think toward the next couple of days, even colder temperatures through thursday slight chance of showers as we head in toward friday. then looks like another chance of some showers late sunday night into monday. that's the latest forecast, guys. back to you. >> thank you. if you are buying a big ticket tech item over the holiday season you may be attempted to get some of those extended warranties on it. cnet editor-at-large brian cooley joins us now to explain is it worth the money? >> reporter: simple answer, we're not big on them. >> no? >> no.
6:48 am
>> reporter: the editors at cnet think they are a pig in a poke most of the time. tvs are what you think of when you think about it. we are not in favor of the warranties. first, televisions don't typically break. you mount them on a wall and they stay there. so just look at the factory warranty. it should be a one-year warranty. that's standard and we find that that's pretty good. that will cover most failures from poor manufacturing. these things tend to die pretty soon if at all. after that you don't handle them a lot. also, think about your credit card. they will often have an extended warranty on your card to buy you another year. tvs are fragile only when dropped. you won't have a problem if you don't walk around with it. tvs look big, thin and fragile and are expensive but they have a coddled life. so they are not an area that we think you should buy an extended warranty on. >> even in earthquake country? >> as long as -- that's where you need a good wall mount. make sure you're in the studs, not the sheetrock. i have been through earthquakes
6:49 am
a couple big ones. the tv did not come down. everything else did. the tv stayed on the wall. another thing to think about are the warranties are cheap for a reason. you may say, wow, it doesn't cost much. it's because they don't have to pay out much. these are not stupid companies. these are insurance-based products and they look at the history of how often things break, and because they don't break very often they don't pay out very often they don't charge you much for them. look at the number. when this looks really cheap, at least a reason. they are not doing i a favor. >> is best buy making the money? >> third party insurance companies that are selling service contracts. this is not usually an extension of the factory warranty. it's a misnomer. they are selling you a parallel service contract for a third party to fix the thing later if it breaks. typically it will not be the factory. and the retailer gets a portion of the sale of that insurance premium and the insurance company gets the rest of it. also, realize that a lot of these warranties are going to run concurrent to the factory. so the first year is a waste. you have the factory coverage. you're buying double coverage that doesn't get you anywhere. so look at the fine print there. if it's concurrent, you're throwing away the first year.
6:50 am
>> are you seeing more people are not getting these warranties now? >> reporter: i would like to think so. some consumer reports data we saw shows that tvs only fail between 4 and 6% of them ever ranging from name brands to unknowns. the highest failure rate could be in laptops around 14% so if there's anyplace you consider a warranty maybe a laptop or notebook. we don't advise it otherwise. >> always good advice, brian. thanks so much. you can find more of brian cooley's tech watch segments on our website at kpix.com/mornings. time now for a look at what's coming up on "cbs this morning." norah o'donnell joins us from new york with more. >> reporter: good morning. hide, we are at the scene of the deadly train derailment with new video released overnight. plus did you know there's actually some new safety technology that is being installed nationwide that could prevent such crashes in the
